Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
