No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
