Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
